When eminent automotive engineer Peter Hill finalised his first book he approached Red Fred Creative to undertake the book design and layout. We were provided with a variety of content including photographs, newspaper clippings and magazine articles documenting a life’s work spanning over 40 years which ended up being over 540 pages in length.
The Look & Feel
Peter already had an idea for the book design. For the cover he wanted to show all of the production cars he had worked on during his time working for Rolls-Royce & Bentley. We created a cover to match his vision complemented by a ‘Rolls-Royce’ navy colour. We also laid out an initial chapter to explore how we could work with the specific engineering style that Peter wanted to present his written content.
The book was mainly created in Adobe InDesign with Photoshop employed to prepare the photography and visual content for the book design. As some of the visual content was replicated from low quality and old source material this provided quite a challenge. The cost of producing such a large hard-back book meant that we decided to create a ‘colour section’ of photographs towards the centre of the book. The book was published with by York Publishing Services and is available to buy from their online store.
In addition we have produced a small microsite for the author to help raise awareness and signpost interested parties to the online store. The book was reviewed by AUTOCAR magazine and was described as: “…one of the most remarkable car books ever written. An absolute treasure.” Red Fred Creative are extremely proud to have been part of this book design project
“I am extremely happy with the book design.”
